CashStar, the digital gifting and incentives company, today shared digital gift card sales trends from the 2010 holiday season. Based on aggregated data from nearly 90 top retail brands, eGift cards once again proved to be a profitable and incremental last minute sales tool for retailers. In both 2009 and 2010, Christmas Eve was the top-selling day of the entire year for CashStar-powered eGift cards. More than one third of sales (35%) on Christmas Eve occurred between 6 pm Eastern through 8 am on Christmas Day. Almost half of these sales took place after 11 pm Eastern.
eGift card sales increased more than 1000 percent between Black Friday (November 26) and Christmas Day; and sales increased 671 percent between the first week of December and Christmas Day.
Other Notable Statistics from 2010 Holiday Season
- This holiday season, 94 percent of all CashStar-powered digital gift cards included a personalized message. And, on average, one in ten consumers uploaded a photo as their eGift card design to make the gift even more personal.
- Nearly one of three consumers printed their own eGift cards from the comfort of their homes or convenience of their offices during Christmas week. The large percentage of consumers who printed their own gift cards were driven by two behavioral factors: 1) Ease and convenience of immediately printing a personalized eGift card that could be given to a friend or family member or placed under the tree, and 2) Many retailers on the CashStar platform provided special incentives (e.g. buy an eGift card and get one for yourself) and consumers took advantage of these attractive offers to treat themselves.
